Framed artwork – choice of frame: black or natural wood
In Les Tomes, Sophie Dumont develops one of her major themes: the library as a mental structure rather than a descriptive space. The books are suggested by broad, colorful verticals, punctuated by horizontal shelves that organize the space without ever enclosing it.
The composition rests on a subtle balance between order and irregularity. The painted edges, deliberately imperfect, alternate between light tones and deeper colors—ochres, muted blues, off-whites, browns, and blacks—creating a visual rhythm that is both stable and vibrant. The material, worked in successive layers, reveals strata, friction, and wiped areas that lend the whole a tactile presence and a silent depth.
Neither figurative nor entirely abstract, the work evokes memory, time, and transmission, without ever imposing a narrative. It thus falls within a painting of restraint, where the structure reassures while the material invites a slow and introspective reading.
The artwork is offered framed, with a black frame for a more graphic and contemporary look, or a natural wood frame for a softer and warmer approach, depending on the presentation environment.
