In Syntax of the Book, Sophie Dumont continues her exploration of stylized libraries as mental and cultural structures. The work does not seek to represent the book as a narrative object, but as a fundamental element of a visual language, organized according to rhythms, balances, and silences.
The vertical lines, reminiscent of book spines, are arranged in an architectural, almost grammatical composition. Each element finds its place within a system of correspondences where color, texture, and spacing play a crucial role. The muted tones—beiges, ochres, grays, blacks, and deep reds—create a calm and contemplative atmosphere, while the layering of oil paints lends the surface a vibrant depth.
The painting oscillates between rigor and sensitivity. The deliberately imperfect outlines allow the gesture to surface and remind us that knowledge, like memory, is built in layers. It thus becomes a metaphor for organized knowledge: a structured yet vibrant thought, silent yet inhabited.
This work is fully in line with Sophie Dumont’s approach, where the library becomes an inner landscape, a place of concentration and transmission, freed from any anecdote to achieve a form of timelessness.
