Sophie Dumont is a contemporary French painter living and working in Normandy. Her work, exclusively in oil on canvas, relies on layering, the depth of the material, and a constant reflection on structure, time, and the trace. For several years, she has been developing a unique universe made up of stylized libraries, abstract landscapes, and interior spaces.
With Ordo continuus, the artist presents a horizontal composition punctuated by a succession of vertical forms reminiscent of books or architectural landmarks. The eye moves naturally along the canvas, punctuated by a more contemplative central section, a true point of equilibrium within the whole. The elongated format accentuates this sense of continuity and progression.
The deliberately restrained palette combines nuanced grays, deep blues, ochres, and earthy tones. These chromatic variations create a subtle tension without ever disrupting the overall harmony. The patinated edges, reworkings, and visible erasures bear witness to the time it took to create the work.
Executed entirely in oil, Ordo continuus reveals a painting crafted over time, where order is never fixed but constantly adjusted. The work invites slow contemplation, offering a silent reflection on persistence, balance, and continuity.
