This work by Sophie Dumont is part of her ongoing exploration of abstract landscape and the passage of time. Constructed in horizontal layers, The Seasons evokes a succession of planes—fields, horizons, luminous expanses—without ever seeking a literal representation. The composition instead suggests a memory of the landscape, a sense of natural cycles and seasonal rhythms.
The canvas was reworked in 2025, enhancing the balance of the composition and its chromatic depth. Successive layers of oil paint, applied with brush and palette knife, create a dense and vibrant texture. Ochres, greens, and blues interact with lighter tones, while warmer accents punctuate the whole, providing both tension and a sense of openness.
Sophie Dumont’s work is characterized by a sensitive approach to color and structure. In The Seasons, each colored band retains its autonomy while contributing to a fluid and harmonious overall effect. The scraped areas and visible overlays attest to a slow and deliberate process, where time itself becomes a true pictorial material.
