Bernard Saint-Maxent is a self-taught French sculptor whose work radiates wit, movement, and a contagious sense of joy. Free from academic conventions, he has developed a singular approach that blends humor, narrative, and craftsmanship. His sculptures feature a lanky, whimsical character that recurs throughout his oeuvre—an embodiment of exuberance and reflection, playfully navigating the contradictions of modern life.
Inspired by the silent-era charm of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, as well as by pop culture, advertising, and contemporary absurdities, Saint-Maxent’s work often delivers lightness with a thoughtful undertone. His pieces are entirely handmade—no molds or casting. Each sculpture begins with a metal structure, shaped by hand with resin, then coated with bronze-effect patinas and mounted on aluminum for wall display. Even the iconic spectacles are crafted individually.
Saint-Maxent believes art should be light-hearted and accessible, offering moments of pleasure while subtly prompting introspection. His distinctive blend of humor and craftsmanship has earned him widespread international appeal.
He has exhibited across Europe, as well as in New York, Toronto, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the UK, notably through his long-standing collaboration with Linda Blackstone since 2008. His solo exhibitions at Place des Vosges in Paris have seen sell-out success, and his work is currently represented in prominent galleries in Honfleur, Courchevel, and Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
