In Mémoire en équilibre, Sophie Dumont continues her exploration of libraries as mental architectures. Here, books are not narrative objects, but silent forms, vertical presences organized in layers, which structure the space and time of the gaze.
The composition relies on a play of subtle balances: an alternation of solids and voids, assertive verticals and horizontal interplay. Each “book” seems to carry its own memory, absorbed and then reordered into a stable, almost meditative structure. Nothing is anecdotal; everything is deliberate, measured, intentionally restrained.
The palette, dominated by nuanced grays, patinated whites, muted blues, and deep earth tones, establishes an atmosphere of profound calm. Darker touches anchor the composition, while lighter passages open up areas of silence, like pauses in thought. The paint, worked in successive layers, retains traces of gesture and time, affirming the painting as a process as much as a finished form.
Memory in Balance is not a descriptive library, but a metaphor for knowledge and inner memory: something that is slowly built, transformed, sometimes erased, but always finds a point of stability. The work invites a slow, almost introspective reading, where the gaze moves smoothly, carried by a sense of fragile yet profoundly controlled order.
