With Sans un Mot, Sophie Dumont pushes her exploration of the library towards an almost minimal abstraction, where volumes are represented only by their imprints. Here, the book, usually the bearer of words and stories, transforms into a silent presence, suggested by material and light.
The use of the palette knife gives the canvas a vibrant texture, where each layer of paint seems to both reveal and conceal. The color range, dominated by off-whites and soft grays, accentuates this impression of faded memory, as if the works had faded over time, leaving only their essence.
Far from being a simple representation of shelves, Sans un Mot questions our relationship to knowledge and the trace it leaves. What remains of a book when it is no longer read? How does knowledge transform over time? This work, both introspective and meditative, invites the viewer to fill in the gaps themselves, to imagine what has been and what could be.
Sophie Dumont presents us with a phantom library, a space for reflection where absence becomes a language, and where each gaze can recreate its own story.
