Michael Strogoff: The Courier of the Czar is a novel written by Jules Verne in 1876. Unlike some of Verne’s other novels, it is not science fiction, but its plot device is a scientific phenomenon. The book was adapted into a play in 1880 by Verne himself and Adolphe d’Ennery.
This artwork is a striking example of Cubist-inspired abstraction, showcasing a complex composition filled with geometrically distorted forms. The central figure appears to be a warrior on horseback, composed of interlocking planes and sharp angles that create a sense of dynamic movement. The use of earthy tones, including muted greens and browns, contrasts sharply with the bold red background, enhancing the overall intensity. Delicate detailing, such as the intricate patterns on the warrior’s attire and the expressive eyes of the horse, adds depth and intrigue. The scythe held by the figure suggests themes of conflict or harvest, while the fragmented style challenges the viewer to explore multiple perspectives simultaneously. This piece uniquely combines traditional subjects with modernist abstraction, creating a visually captivating and intellectually engaging work that invites analysis and reflection on both its aesthetic and thematic elements.
