In The Order of Time, Sophie Dumont explores the notion of time not as a linear chronology, but as an internal construction made up of layers, ruptures, and silences. The work follows on from her research on stylized libraries, where the book becomes a unit of memory and the painting, a space for thought.
The composition, structured in horizontal registers, evokes a methodical, almost architectural organization. Each band acts as a temporal layer: some dense and compact, others more open, allowing the surface to breathe. This alternation creates a subtle tension between order and instability, reminding us that time is structured as much as it is transformed.
The deliberately restrained palette blends mineral tones, deep blues, muted ochres, and patinated whites. These chromatic variations suggest the layering of experiences, the accumulation of knowledge, and the gradual erosion of memory. The material, worked through successive layers, retains the trace of the gesture and the passage of time, lending the work an almost archaeological dimension.
The Order of Time thus offers a silent and meditative reading, where painting becomes a space for reflection on duration, memory, and the construction of meaning. A work that is both rigorous and sensitive, inviting the viewer to slow down and contemplate time as a living entity.
