With Obscura, Sophie Dumont continues her exploration of stylized libraries, a theme that has become one of the major hallmarks of her work. Here, the artist chooses a dark and deep palette—blacks, browns, anthracites, and nocturnal blues—punctuated by a few bursts of ochre and ivory. This subtle contrast creates a visual tension between opacity and light, as if each book harbored its own inner glow.
The composition is based on a dense, slightly inclined vertical structure that seems to vibrate under the effect of successive layers of paint. Painted exclusively in oil, the work reveals a rich, palette knife-worked surface where the pigments are deposited in thick strata. This textural treatment gives the bookcase an almost sculptural presence.
Between abstraction and figuration, it evokes the hidden realm of knowledge, those shadowy areas where thought, memory, and doubt are born. The contrasts in values and the rigor of the compositional rhythm create a profoundly contemplative, almost meditative atmosphere.
This powerful and silent work perfectly embodies Sophie Dumont’s quest: to transform the library into an interior space, a mental landscape where light pierces dark areas to reveal the power of words and ideas.
