My kintsugi is not an austere Zen meditation: it bursts into a “fresh Japanese fusion,” where the ancient art of repair is adorned with a touch of kawaii insolence.
The cracks, instead of quietly healing, become gateways to colorful chaos, a wild celebration of imperfection that refuses to stay silent, a reinvented allegory, rebellious and radiant.
Mixed media on metal, acrylic, embossed gold leaf.
Unique and original artwork.
This painting from my Kin-Kawaii series treats the allegory of kintsugi in an original way by subverting the traditional gold repair—symbol of beauty in imperfection—to infuse it with a “fresh Japanese fusion” that blends ancestral Japanese aesthetics (flowers, porcelain) with Western pop and street art influences. Instead of a sober, philosophical restoration, the cracks are filled with explosive and playful motifs, creating a dynamic and contemporary fusion. My “rebel kawaii” touch adds a key difference: cute (kawaii) elements like cartoon animals are twisted with rebellious accents (aggressive graffiti, skulls, explosions). The breakage becomes a space of joyful, colorful rebellion rather than mere zen acceptance. An urban and contestatory work, reinventing kintsugi as an act of pop empowerment rather than pure tradition.
