Lincoln Townley’s expressive figurative paintings buzz with intimations of anxiety and violence as well as throughlines of the complications of celebrity. Townley has depicted anonymous screaming visages with gaping mouths; he has also painted celebrities like Michael Caine and Clint Eastwood that situate the movie stars in lysergic tie-dye landscapes or intense neon grids. Townley finds inspiration in the work of artists like Francis Bacon and Edvard Munch. He has exhibited in New York City, London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Singapore, Venice, and Brisbane. He participated in the 2019 Venice Biennale and has collaborated with brands like MasterCard and with organizations including the British Academy of Film.
